Context: The Delta of the Mekong River is at the southern tip of vietnam and extending into cambodia – and its one of the largest, most biodiverse, and fertile deltas in the world. It contributes to 90% of Vietnam’s rice exports, 70% of its fruit, and 60% of its seafood - in all, more than 70 million people rely on the river, partly or entirely, for their livelihood. It’s a huge part of national food security and a vital link in the global food supply chain, and it also happens to be gorgeous. It is one of the most threatened deltas in the world, and faces challenges including rising sea levels, salt water intruding into fresh water sources, prolonged droughts, and unpredictable floods. Farmers, cooperatives, and local governments are banding together to adapt their farming practices since the environmental conditions are changing their crop output. An organization working on various issues in the delta is Mekong Plus, they have initiatives such as waste treatment, sorting and recycling, sustainable agricultural practices, eco-friendly construction, and tree planting for the region.
