Context: I’ll start off with the good news - not all redwoods are endangered, and there is certainly new growth in redwood forests. However, coastal redwoods are classified as endangered by the IUCN because of their specific needs.
The overall biggest reason that redwoods are endangered is because of the history of logging of these forests. So much of the original old-growth forest is gone because they were cut down. And the coastal redwoods are further impacted because they rely on moisture from winter rain and coastal fog - however, hotter temperatures and longer droughts from our changing climate have put stress on these forests. These hotter temperatures have also contributed to wildfires that alter forest ecosystems.
Again, I do want to stress that redwoods can grow back, and they can live for thousands of years, so there is hope if the current young growth is conserved.
