Context: There is actually a quaking bog right in the middle of Minneapolis! I am using a reference photo that I took of a quaking bog in Theo Wirth, if you haven’t been there I recommend you go, it’s a beautiful slice of the city. A quaking bog is a wetland which has a surface made of a floating mat of peat and mosses - when you walk on one, the mat can literally move or quake.
Quaking bogs are endangered because they depend on really specific ecological conditions, and those conditions are easy to disrupt. Their main threats are development and roads, rising temperatures which contribute to wildfire, and fertilizer runoff which pollutes the fragile ecosystem.
This week I’d like to highlight the Minneapolis Parks and Recreation Board, which creates programming and preserves these spaces for people in the city. One thing I’ve recently learned about Minneapolis parks is that every resident of Minneapolis is only 6 blocks away from a park, which is such a treat.
