context: Kelp grows in long stems and can grow to more than 100 feet high – it is often nicknamed the sequoia of the sea because of the height of these forests. Kelp provides a vibrant underwater ecosystem that provide food and shelter for thousands of marine species, and from an economic standpoint, kelp supports fisheries and is also edible itself. But the hidden benefit of kelp is that these forests sequester a huge amount of carbon - kelp forests actually store up to 20 times more carbon per acre than forests on land.
In temperate oceans across the globe, kelp forests are in decline because of warming waters, overharvesting and overgrazing by local predators. In northern california, 96% of kelp forests in the region have disappeared.
One organization that is working on conserving kelp forests all around the world is the Kelp Forest Alliance, it is a coalition that brings together people and organizations to protect and restore these ecosystems. Donate to them at https://kelpforestalliance.com/
