Context:

Lake Victoria is the largest freshwater lake in Africa, and actually only second in size in the world to Lake Superior! The lake's area is divided between Tanzania, Uganda, and Kenya. The lake supports the largest freshwater fishery in the world, producing 1 million tons of fish per year and employing 200,000 people, and also provides drinking water and hydropower to the people living around Lake Victoria. Unfortunately there is a laundry list of variables that are impacting the lake, including overfishing, invasive species, habitat loss, deforestation, wetland degradation, and pollution, which is driving many of the lake’s 400 native species into decline. A staggering 76 percent of the lake’s endemic species are threatened with extinction. One local organization that is researching to conserve Lake Victoria is the African Center for Aquatic Research and Education, you can donate to them here: https://www.agl-acare.org/
