Context: Grasslands are so special for a lot of reasons! They can survive and keep regrowing no matter how much they are nibbled on by animals, which means they provide food for countless species. Grasslands also draw massive amounts of carbon from the atmosphere, and they keep soil in place with their roots, which prevents erosion and helps with flooding.
Beyond their ecological and economic value, grasslands are rich cultural landscapes, including for many Indigenous Nations and rural communities, and they are so important for recreation, I personally love watching a sunset over grassland.Despite its importance to the planet, grasslands are one of our most overlooked ecosystems. Most of the world’s remaining natural grasslands are being rapidly converted into farmland - more than 70 percent of America’s prairies have been destroyed.
An organization working on protecting temperate grasslands is called the Conservation Fund, they partner with ranchers, farmers, and locals from Montana to Texas to conserve working lands, develop strong networks, and preserve grasslands. If you’d like to donate to them the link to donate is: https://www.conservationfund.org/
