Context: Fynbos is a biologically diverse ecosystem that includes an array of flowers and shrubs – and it is found in the Cape area of South Africa. Fynbos has been regarded as the greatest natural garden on earth –The plants are so dense and varied that UNESCO added it as one of the world’s greatest centers of terrestrial biodiversity. It is estimated to have over 8,500 species of plants within the fynbos ecosystem - and almost 6,000 of these species can’t be found anywhere else in the world.
Not only are fynbos housing incredible biodiversity, but it is an important rainwater catchment, and a lot of the plants are used for medicine. Fynbos are threatened by invasive plant species, as well as habitat loss due to urbanization and agricultural practices.
An organization working on protecting Fynbos is called FynbosLIFE, which is a wildlife charity and non-profit, run by botanists, ecologists and horticulturists. They protect Cape Town’s local lowland fynbos biodiversity, through educational horticulture, habitat restoration projects, and a conservation nursery. If you’d like to donate to them here is their info: https://www.fynboslife.com/
