Context: The Pacific Forest of Ecuador is the most endangered rainforest on the planet. It has lost a staggering 98% of its forest, and is the most threatened tropical ecosystem on earth. The main driver of deforestation in the Pacific Forest is unsustainable agriculture - namely, cattle ranching and slash-and-burn corn cultivation. This has led to critically endangering animal species, including the Ecuadorian Capuchin monkey, which is on the IUCN Critically Endangered List.
One organization working to preserve and restore the Pacific Forest of Ecuador is the Third Millennium Alliance. They pair active forest protection with restoration projects that are community-driven to address the social and economic reasons behind deforestation. Specifically, they use a regenerative agroforestry model centered on shade-grown heirloom cacao, and they are planning to establish a 100,000 acre conservation zone for the Ecuadorian Capuchin.
